What is Physical Security?
Physical security measures must be capable of effectively preventing, detecting and mitigating risks relating to theft, temperature, fire, smoke, water, vibration, terror, vandalism, power outages, chemicals or explosives. (source: CobiT 4.1)
The following are the components of physical security measures:
Physical Access
You can secure your land, building, office or home with locked gates, fences and doors. You can further strengthen physical security with bars on the windows, security doors and additional locks (i.e. dead bolts) or latches.
However you will need to grant access, or known as access control. For example, keys for locks, remote controls, personal identification number (PIN) devices, biometric devices (e.g. finger print reader, retina scanner) and tokens or cards (e.g. access cards, proximity or RFID tokens).
Environmental Controls
You can install measures to protect people and assets from fire, smoke, water leaks, gas leaks, power outages or fluctuations, temperature fluctuations and vandalism.
Detection
Sensors are commonly available for detecting motion, water leaks, gas leaks, vibrations, changes in power voltage, smoke and changes in temperature. These sensors are normally installed with a control unit or alarm panel. When the sensors are triggered, an action will take place. For example, a motion sensor is triggered by an intruder which sets off an alarm and a siren sounds.
Monitoring and Response
An alarm panel or control unit monitors the sensors and records any sensors being triggered as an event. These events typically require a response. For example, an alarm siren sounds as a result of a motion sensor triggered by an intruder, and the security guard is sent to investigate and detain the intruder.
Surveillance is monitoring from a distance by means of electronic equipment (such as CCTV cameras or IP cameras). CCTV (closed circuit TV) means the signal is not openly transmitted but can be monitored by security guards and connected to a digital video recorder. IP Cameras can be access remotely via the internet and can also be connected to a digital video recorder.
